How Zalgo and Glitch Text Actually Works
Glitch text does not use special glitch fonts. Instead, it exploits an intentional feature of the Unicode standard: Combining Diacritical Marks (Unicode range U+0300 to U+036F). In languages like French, Vietnamese, or ancient Greek, diacritics are accents placed above or below letters (like é or ü).
The Unicode standard allows an indefinite number of diacritical marks to be stacked onto a single base character. The glitch text generator programmatically selects dozens of random combining marks—accents, tildes, crosses, dots, and horns—and stacks them on top of and below each letter. When your browser or app attempts to render them, the marks spill outside the standard line height, creating the iconic "corrupted" or "hacked" effect.
